Anita Ekberg

 

Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29 September 1931 11 January 2015) was an Swedish actress, who was active in American and European films, renowned for her beauty and stunning silhouette. Her iconic character of Sylvia in Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita (1960) earned her fame. Ekberg was born in Sweden on 29 September 1931. She was the sixth child of eight. Anita was a fashion model during her teens. Ekberg participated in the Miss Malmo competition in 1950 after her mother's encouragement. She took home the Miss Sweden contest. Even though she could speak little English Ekberg travelled to the United States to compete for the Miss Universe 1951 title. It was an unofficial pageant at the time. The pageant became official in 1952. While Ekberg didn't win the Miss Universe pageant, as one of six contestants, she did earn the title of a starlet with Universal Studios. Ekberg was an Universal starlet where she was taught the art of elocution, drama and dance. She was briefly featured in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) (playing a woman in Venus), Take Me to Town (1953), and The Golden Blade (1953).
