Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house of a member of jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
