Rachel Emily Nichols was born in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Alison and James Nichols, a schoolteacher. She has English, French Canadian, German, Irish, Italian and Scottish heritage. Cony High School was her high school in Augusta. She graduated with a math diploma as well as a competitive high jump. Columbia University in New York City was where she received the double degree of economics and math.
