Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama.
