Hernandez began his rapping career in 2012 when he met Peter Rodgers, CEO, of Hikari-Ultra in New York. He asked Hernandez if Hernandez had rapped on the basis of his appearance and said that Hernandez was a model as a rapper. Hernandez started releasing rap tracks in 2014, starting with "69" in August 2014, "Pimpin", in September 2014, as well as "Who The Fuck is You" and "4769" in October 2014. The latter of which was his first collaboration as a solo artist with two rappers from the Brooklyn collective Pro Era, J.A.B. and Dirty Sanchez. He released multiple songs and videos with names like "Scumlife", Yokai, and "Hellsing Station" in the following three years. The rap style he used to rap with and his usage of anime in music video graphics attracted the attention of fans. A lot of his first songs were issued by FCK THEM, a music label based in Slovakia. He adopted the stage name "Tekashi69"; "Tekashi" is a reference to Japanese anime and manga, which was something he loved, while "69" refers to both the 69 sex position and the yin-yang symbol. The name became a cult meme due to the long rainbow-colored hair, tattoos, and rainbow-plated grills. [5][26] Hernandez began working with Andrew Green, a rapper who was previously known as TrifeDrew. He previously collaborated in music videos, and was now able to work on video once more.
